Recently published sources preserved in the Archivio Ducal de Medinaceli allow to study a linguistic, social and economic aspect of an area of southern Calabria that in the Norman-Swabian kingdom maintained a population of rite and Byzantine private language.

Between Time and Culture: Anthropology and Historicity in the Study of Ancient Literature

2015

ENGLISH Since several decades the use of an ethno-anthropological approach has met with considerable success among classical scholars. The comparative analysis of ancient and ‘primitive’ cultures and the application of anthropological models to the interpretation of classical texts have stood out as a powerful alternative to traditional philology. This paper reassesses the complex relationship between cultural anthropology and classical studies, highlighting the relevance of historicity and diachronic factors as basic dimensions of both fields. Indeed, classicists referring to ethno-anthropology and its methods have sometimes inclined to see Graeco-Roman antiquity as a stereotypically homog…

From a previous approach about phonetic and morphological features in the Hippocratic treatrises De fistulis and …

Reconsidering authorship in the Ciceronian corpus through computational authorship attribution

2019

In recent years, methods of computational authorship attribution have offered promising results for the reattribution of classical texts. We use and further develop these methods to verify the authorship of several texts belonging or related to the Ciceronian corpus: Rhetorica ad C. Herennium, De inventione, De optimo genere oratorum, and Commentariolum petitionis. We use two classifiers, Support Vector Machine and Convolutional Neural Network, of which the latter is more accurate except in regard to certain aspects of vocabulary. The most important of our results is that Commentariolum petitionis seems to be authored by Marcus Cicero, not by his brother Quintus. Negli ultimi anni metodi co…

De súplica a pseudo-debate: Helena 894 ss.

2021

Women in Aeschylean scene: a linguistic characterization

2021

This paper examines the linguistic devices by means of which Aeschylus achieved the presentation of the female characters of the Oresteia. The analysis is made after a survey of the…
